« Decorum » (Soft Pastel, 20 x 25)

When I saw this beautiful display in a gift shop in the Maritimes, the horse’s sad expression struck a chord in me. Although the horse looked real, it wasn’t. It was stuck in an artificial décor. This reminded me of the way information can be framed in an appealing, yet misleading fashion. How much of what we know has been decorated to hide reality? Decorum – a façade of good manners, or a slick way to manipulate the truth?

Quand j’ai vu ce bel étalage dans une boutique au Nouveau Brunswick, l’expression triste du cheval m’a prise à la gorge. Le cheval avait l’air tellement réel, mais il ne l’était pas. Il était coincé dans un décor artificiel. Cela me fait penser à la façon dont l’information peut être encadrée dans une forme attirante, pourtant trompeuse. À quel point nos connaissances ont-elles été décorées pour dissimuler la réalité? Décorum – une façade de bienséances ou une manière rusée de manipuler la vérité?
